Knut
Hamsun 2009
Transgression, worlding and remediation
Oslo
27 -29 August 2009
Forskningskonferanse
i Oslo i 2009 i forbindelse med 150-årsjubileet for Knut
Hamsuns fødsel.
Knut Hamsun and his literary universe signal transgression on
aesthetic, political and cultural levels – for better and
worse. While his aesthetic transgressions secured him a position
as one of Scandinavia’s earliest modernist writers, his
politically provocative views secured him a position as one of
Scandinavia’s problematic literary heroes. Hamsun’s
texts have also exceeded national barriers and made their way
into so-called world literature. In addition, they have slipped
into new media, especially film and theatre.
The subtitle
of this conference has been chosen:
1) – to invite lectures and papers on transgression and
boundary-breaking in Hamsun’s literature. The topic may
be explored thematically and/or formally in his literary fiction.
It may also be explored in his non-literary works, in his life
as a private and public person, in the handling of his legacy,
or in any combination of the above.
2) – to welcome talks on his position in “world literature”
as this may come across in literary histories, school text books,
etc. Case studies from various countries at various historical
periods are relevant. So are translation and influence studies.
3) – to encourage presentations on adaptation/remediation.
This may be carried out with a focus on film and theatre adaptations.
The topic also includes book history, philology and other relevant
topics.
Each
of the above descriptions is meant to advance, not limit, potential
topics. The overall goal is to inspire innovative research pertaining
to Hamsun’s role as a national, postnational and transnational
author.
Dette
er bare en foreløpig orientering. Call for papers vil komme

The 16th International Strindberg Conference
"Strindberg: Art, Science, Experiment"
Bonn
16 - 18 Oktober 2008
Although literature may be said to have always
been at the center of August Strindberg´s artistic universe,
the Swedish writer was also constantly observing the other larger
and smaller planets orbiting the cosmos of his curiosity: the
visual arts, as well as photography, chemistry and alchemy, biology
and geology, optics and astronomy. However, while a man of science
would have been looking to find answers, Strindberg was more interested
in opening up the field to new questions. What distinguished him
from a clear-cut scientist, were his often unexpected approaches,
his declared subjectivity, and his stunning originality.
The 16th International Strindberg Conference,
which will be held in Bonn, aims to explore Strindberg´s
wide range of interests further. As its title, "Art, Science,
and Experiment", indicates, we want to pay particular attention
to correspondences between, on the one hand, the scientific curiosity
and the experimental side of Strindberg´s different activities,
on the other, his writing. How did Strindberg´s observations
and ´sensations´ - to use a key concept from the end
of the nineteenth century - contribute to renewing genres and
modes of writing? To what extent did Strindberg´s new dramaturgy
answer to a world that had come to be regarded as a dynamic world,
a world in constant flux? Can his search for similarities and
correspondences perhaps be regarded as a counter-reaction to the
compulsion of constant (technological and economic) innovation,
presenting simultaneously a challenge and a resistance?
At a time when the non-observable - at least to
the naked eye - became more and more crucial to any (scientific)
explanations and theories of relativity and the unconscious conquered
the world, Strindberg seems to have been acutely aware that aesthetics
could no longer remain within a state of naivity.
